How to Measure a V-Belt: Quick Guide

Worn-out belt, no part number? You can work out what you need with a tape or a piece of string.

Step 1: Measure the length

Belt off the machine:

  1. Mark a line across the belt with a white marker.
  2. Line a flexible tape up with the mark.
  3. Wrap the tape around the outside of the belt until it meets the mark.

Belt still on the pulleys:

  1. Hold one end of a piece of string on top of the belt.
  2. Wrap the string around the pulleys until it meets the other end.
  3. Mark where the two ends meet and take the string off.
  4. Lay it flat and measure from the end to the mark.

Step 2: Find the section

Look for the letters on the belt:

·         Classical V-belts: Z, A, B, C, D, E

·         Fractional horsepower (FHP): 3L, 4L, 5L

·         Narrow/Wedge V-belts: SPZ, SPA, SPB, SPC

·         US Narrow V-belts: 3V, 5V, 8V

No markings left? Measure the top width and depth and compare them to a section chart. Our full guide has one.

Step 3: Work out the part number

What you've measured is the outside length. For classical belts, subtract the amount below to get the belt number:

Section

Subtract

A

2"

B

3"

C

4"

D

5"

E

6"

Example: an A-section belt measuring 24" outside is an A22.

Most belts are sized in inches, so if your tape is metric, divide by 25.4.
